The type of nails you choose to use when installing cedar shake siding should be considered also.
Nails should be long enough to penetrate underlying materials in the cedar shingles at least 3 4 inches or all the way through.

White cedar shingles are nailed 1 1 2 inch above the butt line and 3 4 inch in from each end.

The staples should also have a minimum crown width of 7 16 inch and should be long enough to penetrate the sheathing 3 4 inch or all the way through.
I have done a few cedar shingle jobs all siding and it works pretty well.
Bevel siding should be face nailed to studs with 1 1 4 inch penetration into solid wood using one nail per piece spaced at a maximum of 24 inches on center.

And you will use a ridiculous amount of nails.
Manufacturers recommend a 1 1 4 inch 3d box or shingle nail for new construction and a 1 3 4 inch 5d nail when going over another siding material.
