Nails for the framing and 18 gauge 2 in.
How to nail window boxes on aluminum siding.
The first thing you do is remove the bottom edge of the top piece of siding.
This renders the siding vulnerable to moisture and voids the warranty even if you seal the hole.
Trim out the biggest windows first.
Hang a metal window box on the vinyl siding hooks.
That way you can reuse miscuts for the smaller windows and not run out of material.
If you want to hang something from your vinyl siding don t even think about drilling through it to attach a hook to the sheathing.
To prevent splitting avoid nailing closer than 2 in.
Traditionally window boxes are nailed or screwed right into the siding of a house but this doesn t work when you ve got vinyl siding nailing and screwing can damage the vinyl siding beyond.
When nailing 3 4 in thick trim use 15 gauge 2 1 2 in.
Starting at the horizontal side and at the bottom insert the j hook up in between the two seams and pull the lip of the top piece down gently.
This will ensure that the weight is evenly distributed and the box is level.
Use a j hook that you make out of a coat hanger to pull the bottom of the top siding.
Mount them at a height on the window box so that when it is hung the vinyl siding hooks will not be visible.
Make sure you distance the hooks so that they are on each end of the box.
There are at least three alternative ways to do it.
